After the manner of Ovid's Metamorphasis, In a series of successive, interconnected stories that span thousands of years in this world, Azhran is if not the main character, the only one who consistantly appears, and who acts as the catylist. The reader will swiftly fall in love with the lush, decadant, gothic atmosphere and the characters who make their way through it.

A blind bard with the power to know the history of any object he touches thus falls in love with an imperiled woman and vows to rescue her before they even meet. A tyrant is punished for his hubris. A deformed witch seeks dark powers as a means of revenge on the world that shunned her. Siblings that are one soul in two bodies, separated even before birth, struggle to find and complete each other.

But it is Azhran who appears again and again, and it is Lee's spot-on characterization that makes readers believe that the same being who views humanity as his playthings would, in the end, risk his own existance to save the world from a threat he himself inadvertently created.

On a side-note, I had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook, and Susan Duerden's performance perfectly suited the tale.

Once in a very great while, we encounter a perfect book. Tanith Lee's NIGHT'S MASTER is just such a work. I won't say "I wish I could give it ten stars" because in truth, Lee's collection of interwoven short stories rises well above the conventional star system. Flat Earth is a place where imagination is completely set free. Engaging, passionate, sensual, and cruel; with surprising and fulfilling moments of true heroism. Told with prose that reads like poetry. I could keep raving about it, but really, YOU should be reading the story instead. Get a copy of this book. You won't regret it.
Some of these tales remind me of Navajo stories of Coyote the Trickster. However, as I recall most or all of the Coyote tales taught some sort of lesson. Except for the final story about Hate the stories in this book seem to be just capricious and mean.

Probably my least favorite Sword & Laser book so far.
I use this novel as a textbook in a course called "Sympathy for the Devil" (4 fantasy novels, all by women, featuring supernatural male protagonists who are all defined as "devils" in some sense). This book is actually more of a collection of interrelated stories than a novel. It is meant to seem both ancient and timeless, and has an "Arabian Nights" feel. Every story includes a lesson, and the climax of the plot is both logical and unexpected. Tanith Lee's jewelled language perfectly suits the subject-matter. There are 2 versions that I know of an out-of-print paperback from DAW Books, and a larger, more expensive paperback from Norilana Books, with a cover designed by the author's artist husband. (The Norilana book is more attractive, but the DAW cover is delightfully cheesy.)
Somewhere back in the late '70s or very early '80s, I first read "Nights"s Master". I was in my teens and thought I was so very aware of the world. I loved the book then, I now realize how young and innocent I was. But that is a good thing! Upon reading it again, 30 something years later, I found a richer, more wonderful story. Suffice it to say, the book I read then, and the book I read this last week were, while exactly the same words in the same order, not the same story. An excellent read!
There are no words, and my mastery of language is insufficient to describe the beauty of the writings of Tanith Lee. In "Night's Master", the first of a trilogy, the reader is introduced to the Flat Earth, Azhrarn, prince of the Vazdru, and Sivesh. First you will find out how a mortal pays the price for betraying the demon that loves him, then you will follow that demon as he treads the world and experiences the world of mortals whilst toying with them... and learning about himself.
The stories are ornate, robust, and complex. Lee makes the entranced reader feel all of the subtle, and not-so-subtle emotions of the characters. This is one of the very, very few books that can pull the reader to a greater realm where they can learn more about even themselves.
I've read Ms. Lee's books before and have usually enjoyed them but I didn't expect what I read in this book. I thought it was going to be a mix of Middle Eastern or Arabian Nights type of tales but it truly wasn't like that it at all. I would say it was sort of Middle Eastern but much darker and I almost quit reading the book just because I found the first story just a bit off for my taste. I did get through it but wasn't something I couldn't get into totally. Others may enjoy it but it was a book that had taken me longer to read than normal.
It was a good story written as a mythos in the vein of Edith Hamilton's Mythology as opposed to a novel or standard narrative. This means that it is more a loosely connected bunch of stories that tend to have a meaning, but some are much better than others. If you are looking for a page turner this won't be your cup of tea but if you enjoy exploring new and different kinds of worlds, then you should check this book out
