This story starts with a bang - I ordered it in October 2013 because I was intrigued and impressed by the Chapter One included at the end of the previous tale in this series. In many ways this story has the elements to earn a 4 or 5 star.
It has great characters. Many of them have faced enormous challenges, pain, loss and death. The author does a good job of exploring the different ways in which various of the characters have responded to their awful experiences.
The H chooses violence, self-inflicted and, willingly, at the hands of others. Some are eaten up by revenge and plan violence to others, even innocent bystanders. Others cling to the strength of family and can even laugh when hungry. The h chooses to help addicts, while dispassionately closing off her emotions.
The h, the H, and the H's father are joined in their search for love and redemption, transforming as they finally face their demons.
All very fascinating.
Yet this book lost me by the end.
I remained unconvinced by the withdrawal from opium or the H's physical condition after years of addiction and one year of an in-the-gutter state. In the case of the former, it didn't last long enough and the severity of symptoms were underdone. For the latter, narcotic addicts of long duration (and, in this case, the H spent night after night for the previous year lying in opium dens) do not eat healthily and I do not believe that a man with his history would have a swoon-worthy body with defined six-packs.
Nor were incarcerated "madmen" of that era anything close to clean. So the "romance" of the first kiss was obliterated for me by the realisation that the H had been on a series of benders over weeks and had been in a cell, unwashed, for days.
The ending provided the final disappointment. It was truncated. The h and the H were in serious conflict one minute and three breaths later she had been abducted (why do evil doers take people they intend to kill and then transport them elsewhere for a conversation only?) rescued, reconciled and fully trusting of her husband. That isn't to forget that an anarchist plot has been foiled and the fate of her brother enacted. Too much, too soon.
Despite its flaws, I would still recommend this book. It isn't bad. It just isn't a keeper.

The Dark Affair A Novel of Mad Passions Máire Claremont 9780451418012 Books Reviews
MADLY PASSIONATE!! OK look, sometimes I hate writing reviews because i can never find the right words for them. So here are a few words. FAST. HARD. PASSIONATE. BEAUTIFUL. AMAZING. BRILLIANT. LOVELY.
the whole series was about the darker side of the regency era it was wonderful
This is a wonderful series. I love how Margaret and James were able to show each other how to love and trust again. I also liked how this series dealt with such serious issues, such as addiction, abuse, and mental illness.
This story is not the kind I would normally pick. The Lord and The Lady go through a great deal to find happiness and joy. Coming out of the dark side of drug addition into the light, with the lady being the lord's caretaker and teacher, to make this transition is most difficult and moving. It is a 'trip' on its own. As one can't live both in the past and in the future - leaving no room to be in the present. "Be Here Now" by est.
I am definitely a fan of Maire Claremont's books. I have enjoyed every one so far and this is not an exception. Powers is a wonderful "wounded" Hero. He has suffered long and hard and its time for his HEA! Lady Margaret has also had a very hard life and is truly over due for her HEA. Together they overcome the odds and learn that they don't have to suffer alone. This was another wonderful read and one that I could not put down.
I have loved this whole series. The description of the conditions in an insane assylm at this time in history is probably pretty close to the awful conditions. But of course not as as horrific as the ones in these books. I would really liked it if she had written a story about the woman he saw leg chained in the hall because she had tried to escape so many times. Such courage would I think made a wonderful book. I wonder if she has any intention of writting her story.
THE DARK AFFAIR is the fourth installment of author Maire Claremont’s uniquely dark and wonderful “Mad Passions” series and one I have been greatly looking forward to for some time. Why? Because it features the reluctant and unlikely hero, Viscount Powers who played a major role in THE LADY IN RED, which, until now, was my favorite, book in the series so far.
While fighting his own demons of opium addiction to help Mary in that book, the character practically screamed with the need to have his own story told and I’m so glad that he has now been given his shot at a happy ending.
Ms. Claremont is not afraid to take her characters into the darkest of places and as the story begins James is locked inside of a mental hospital after having relapsed into addiction and come dangerously close to dying. In a last ditch effort to save his son from permanent committal, James’ father calls in Lady Margaret Cassidy—a woman with experience dealing with opium addiction.
From the very first these two clash, but Maggie is determined to help James whether he likes it or not. The plot thickens when James’ father proposes an offer she cannot refuse—marry his son in exchange for the help she needs to save her brother.
After Maggie reluctantly accepts the story really takes off as these two verbally spar their way through a highly charged attraction, James’ recovery and their ultimate battle to learn how to love and trust again.
This is one of those books that you simply CANNOT put down, no matter what else you might need to be doing. So be warned. Do not begin unless you have several hours to kill!
I continue to be impressed by the level of Ms. Claremont’s writing and her courage to take her characters to darker places without the sugar coating you might find in other books.
HIGHLY recommend this title and STRONGLY encourage readers to look for the previous titles in the “Mad Passions” series.
