Arabella edition by Anne Herries Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
'Arabella' opens with Gervase, the hero, meeting the heroine, an encounter which leaves Arabella disliking Gervase. As I read I wasn't sure if I, too, would dislike Gervase, but Anne Herries gives strong reasons for his behaviour and as the story goes on he is revealed in a much better light. Arabella is far more than a red-haired, spirited beauty. She is a survivor and a romantic, risking all for love. Both have a good deal of suffering and growing to do through the novel and both deserve each other. Anne Herries shows them to be well suited and their HEA is as romantic as I hoped it would be.
This is a Georgian romance, gritty and realistic. The evils of slavery, forced indenture, transportation, baby selling and more are drawn into the story, which sweeps from England to America. The author shows the inequalities and injustices of that time with a vivid and sympathetic eye.
Warmly recommended.
