The story itself was actually very good.

However, I'm very glad this was a free book as there was no indication that it was "part 1" if a serial story.

I would have been very disappointed had I paid for this book. Its a real shame. Had the book been complete, it could have been exceptional.

Personally I can't stand this type of thing. It's one thing if its an actual "series" that has a complete story line with some type of resolution for the main character.

But, when the book just stops without any type of resolution it turns me off what would have otherwise been a very enjoyable book.

The Scarlet Thread Fated Destruction Book 1 edition by DS Murphy Children eBooks Reviews

I couldn't put this down last night. I kept reading until it was done, and then started all over again. Kai is torn up inside by her past, and lives her life thinking no one believes her, but that's part of a curse placed on her very distant ancestor. The one night she lets herself act like a normal teenager, everything changes and she must learn to defend herself and decide who to trust.
Lucky for me, I knew this book had a sequel (which I bought when I was nearly finished reading this one), so I could just enjoy the story, knowing I could pick up where it left off by reading the next novel, The Golden Shears. I'm hooked on this story -- just as I became hooked on two other novels written by this author Shearwater and Prescient. I look forward to reading The Golden Shears, and I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good story with a believable and likable heroine and a great story that weaves Greek mythology into real life in a way that makes it excruciatingly hard to stop reading. I blame the author (partly) for being extra tired the mornings after staying up late to read this book.
This book seems quite close to the Percy Jackson series, if it had gore, death and totalitarian dictatorship. Not a bad series start, quite inventive world building, but be warned this is basically Fated Destruction 400 page intro. The book has almost no finale as such, no book level story arch worth noting. As a setup for the series it serves well, as a standalone not really.
If I had to choose one word for this book it would be "powerful". This is a dark gothic Greek mythology urban Fantasy with a highly original and very well-written plot. There are several unexpected twists and turns here and a real shocker at the end (which I shall not give away as I'm not a spoiler). This is not your G-rated fantasy. It's harsh, twisted and real, yet there is hope.

Overall I really enjoyed this book, but a double warning is needed. First, this is an addictive book so you can anticipate that you will be rushing to get its sequel, The Golden Shears, as soon as possible once you've finished this book. (I know I will be doing so, and luckily my understanding is that it's about to be made available on kindle.) Second, this author has a habit of ending books on cliffhangers. I don't actually consider this book a total cliffhanger as much is resolved, but the really is not even a close to a total resolution of all too much - and that "real shocker" I mentioned above is got to have a major impact.

I give it 4 stars mostly do to the quasi cliffhanger. If you find anything even hinting of cliffhangers of any sort to be abhorrent then subtract another star (though I certainly wouldn't go further than that). If you're not bothered by cliffhangers, especially when they're only "quasi" cliffhangers then consider adding that last star.

Highly recommended.
I'm so frustrated right now.

You know those series of books that actually feel like all three books are one complete book and the author just cut the first one off randomly at a cliffhanger to force you to buy the next books? This is one of those.

I should say that I don't mind when authors leave some threads untied. In Justin Cronin's Passage books, the first two books never resolve the overall issue of the virus that has taken over America. In the Harry Potter books, you don't know what's going to happen with Harry and Voldemort until the final chapters. But for those series, each book still wraps up its own story. In book one of Harry Potter, Harry defeats the immediate danger. In Justin Cronin's first book, the characters defeat the villain they're hunting. For a series to really feel like a series, in my opinion, this is how it should go each book should wrap up its own conflict while still leaving some overall conflicts or story arcs in place.

That is where this book fails.

Don't get me wrong the story is compelling and extremely well told. Despite a few typos that make me think some professional editing is still needed (a random "my" in the middle of a sentence; a "too" where it should be "to"), I was hooked. I loved the main character. I felt the tension. I was on board for the plot.

But then I came to the end of the book and...it wasn't the end. We were left absolutely and completely hanging and the next book isn't even available for purchase yet.

This is a self-publishing trick that I loathe and it has turned what would have been - if completed - a five-star story into a three star review.

If you don't mind books that seem to end in the middle and force you to wait for the next two installments (of which the second will no doubt also end in an inscrutable place), go for it. If not, hold off - do not start reading! At least until both the follow up "books" (read pieces of a single book) are done.
The story itself was actually very good.

However, I'm very glad this was a free book as there was no indication that it was "part 1" if a serial story.

I would have been very disappointed had I paid for this book. Its a real shame. Had the book been complete, it could have been exceptional.
