Well, shoot. I really wanted to like this book. I have read quite a few memoirs by women about living and working in the Australian bush country and for the most part loved the books and was so impressed with the women who wrote them ... But not this one. It starts out well, the very first pages describing the death of her mother and the devastating effect this had on her father and the other three siblings. The father was a drover and after a couple of false starts at other types of life, understandably had to return to the only life he knew. So he took his four young children droving with him, and there is the book: tale after tale of the rough life as cattle drovers. I finally flipped ahead to the final parts of the book, thinking that she, or her sister, or maybe one of her brothers would at least be curious about life on a ranch, or in a city, or anything other than cattle droving as the roadtrains (trucks) became the norm ... But to the last page it is pretty much just the five of them and their dogs and horses, droving.

The author has written a sequel called "Heart Country" and I am thinking maybe that book will follow her into a different sort of life and maybe explain how she got the schooling that enabled her to write and publish the books, as there is no mention of any schools or even any other significant people here. Just droving.

I have never been an avid reader but i did enjoy Pieces of Blue. A good read.
This story is sometimes hard to read because it is so honest about the life and times of a young family struggling on in life and trying to be accepted. The did very well to suvive the times and the rough start in life.
